The Key Laboratory of Palaeobiology and Petroleum Stratigraphy(LPPS)is affiliated with the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was formed by the integration of the "State Key Laboratory of Palaeobiology and Stratigraphy(LPS)" and "Key Laboratory of Resource Stratigraphy and Palaeogeography, Chinese Academy of Sciences".

The mission of LPPS is to concentrate on advancing paleobiology and stratigraphy at the global level, in alignment with national security imperatives for petroleum resources. It aims to explore the mysteries of the origin and evolution of earth life, to reveal the co-evolution mechanisms of life and environment and their resource effects. LPPS is also responsible for developing high-precision palaeogeographic maps of petroleum strata in significant terrestrial sedimentary basins, establishing an offshore continental shelf stratigraphic framework, and providing precise spatiotemporal data (gold calibrator) for the exploration and development of petroleum resources.

The goal of LPPS is to establish itself as a leading research centre in the fields of paleontology and petroleum stratigraphy application, contributing to national Petroleum resource security, and making a significant impact globally.

LPPS currently has 73 research and technical members, including 1 CAS academicians, 6 professionals supported by the "National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars", and 3 research groups supported by the "NSFC Science Fund for Creative Research Groups”. The team has considerable international influence, with more than 20 people undertaking key positions in important international academic organizations.
